October 2023 to February 2024

Back to Thailand for the Winter 2023-2024

This year we’re starting in Bangkok. We’ve booked an Airbnb 23rd floor condo for 4 weeks at The Room Sukhumvit 69. It’s literally a stones throw from Phra Khaong BTS Skytrain station. 🚝

Next, we’re going north to Chiang Mai and into another Airbnb condo, The LIV@NIMMAN also for 4 weeks. Chiang Mai is our favourite city in Thailand.

Our visas will expire Just before Christmas, so we’re doing a 4 day road trip into northern Thailand, crossing into Laos as pedestrians (we just get stamped out of Thailand, take a bus across the “Friendship Bridge”, pay US$45 for a Laos visa, turn around and get stamped out of Laos and take the bus back across the Mekong) in order to activate the 2nd term of our Thai visa.

We’ll go back to Chiang Mai and spend 4 days over Christmas before flying down to Krabi and home to Siboya. 🌴😎

Finally, sometime towards the end of January, we’re planning to bounce along the east coast, north and south of Hua Hin. Stop and Go adlib. 🕉

Our flight back to Victoria is February 18th. 🥶

October 2022 to February 2023

The Time Has Finally Come

Packed and ready to hit the dusty trail once again. Bringing only two carry-on size bags each. Still seems like too much.

Last time we were in South East Asia was February 2016, that’s 6 years and 9 months. I hope we can remember how to speak some Thai.

We fly out of Victoria at 10:00am on Thursday, October 27, transit Vancouver and board Air Canada to Tokyo. After a 3hr 25min layover we board ANA to Bangkok.

We have timed the escape seeming quite well… after a very dry, warm and sunny fall… the forecast is for one of those atmospheric rivers to come roaring in as we leave.

Stay tuned…

The Moss Lady pictured, is in the 200 acre park directly in front of our place… Beacon Hill Park

February 2016 to October 2022

Waiting for a safe world.

Well not quite… up until April 2020 we were taking care of Joann’s dad, Joe. It’s been a wild ride giving him a fabulous last 5 years. He passed on April 2nd, 2020 at 98 years. Went quickly and never really suffered the full effect of the Covid lockdown.

We’ve been in a holding pattern waiting for the Vaccine. Now we are both double Vaxed and double Boostered so we finally have plans to head back to SE Asia the end of October 2022. Not to say living in good ol’ Victoria has in any way, been a hardship, oh contraire.

Thailand Revisited

I don’t mean to sound blase… but no we’re not yet excited about heading off on a six-month leave of absence. Although we do seem to be smiling a lot more often and for no apparent reason at all. Our ETA in Hong Kong is estimated to be 10:00PM tomorrow… should be fun finding a place to stay at that time of the night.

September 1984 to January 1985

Yelapa, Mexico

In late 1983 BCTel-CT&S was in down-size mode… so we were returned to headquarters (from Victoria to Vancouver). Part of the down-sizing included the mass approval of leaves of absence. It had been 3 years since we had been back from our Pacific Rim Walkabout… wanderlust was again setting in. So I successfully obtained a 6 months leave of absence and we headed for Mexico for the winter.

December 1979 to June 1981

Pacific Rim Tour

Joann was infected with wanderlust long before I knew her. (Blame it on her dad, Joe) And, ever since we’ve been together I’ve heard… “Bob, we just have to go traveling. If we don’t, we’ll regret it.”
So here goes… we sold our house, quit our jobs and bought one-way tickets to Bangkok…
